Standards patents have three very favorable advantages over
traditional patents.
A standard patent covers some of the content of a standard document's specifications, making it virtually impossible for a provider of a product/service that conforms to the standard document's specifications to circumvent the scope of the standard patent.
In a typical patent, infringement must be proven by reverse engineering, interpreting source code, or verifying manufacturing processes. However, in the case of a standardized patent, the patent holder can prove infringement by proving that the claims of the patent map to the standard document.
Typically, the product or service for which a standard is specified has a very large market, so the value of the patent is often relatively high.
